Parishes and Institutions in the AVS

As of December 31, 2019, the Vicariate ministered to approximately 203,000 Catholics, representing 3.4% of a total population of nearly 5.98 million. The pastoral infrastructure includes 36 parishes and 5 mission stations. The clergy comprises 58 priests, with a nearly even split between diocesan (31) and religious (27) priests. Additionally, there are 65 religious members (30 brothers and 35 sisters) and 4 seminarians contributing to the Vicariate's mission. 

1. Dubbo Our Lady of Lourdes Parish

Dubbo Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, located in Dubbo, Wolaita, Ethiopia, is a vibrant Catholic community with a rich history of spiritual and social engagement. The parish has been instrumental in fostering faith and community development in the region. 

The parish is renowned for its active youth programs, organizing retreats and spiritual activities to engage young members. Leadership has played a pivotal role in the parish's development. Reverend Fr. Dejene Hidoto Gamo, O.F.M. Cap., the current Bishop of AVS served as parish priest from 2000 to 2006. His tenure contributed significantly to the parish's growth and community outreach. 

Overall, Dubbo Our Lady of Lourdes Parish stands as a testament to enduring faith and community spirit, continually adapting to meet the spiritual and social needs of its congregation.

Bitena Parish Our Lady of Queen of Peace

Bitena Parish: 

Amid the rolling landscapes and vibrant communities of its region, Bitena Parish stands as a beacon of hope and spiritual nourishment. Dedicated to Our Lady, Queen of Peace, the parish embodies its patron’s message of harmony, love, and devotion to Christ.

With a Catholic population of 6,000, Bitena Parish is a thriving faith community, committed to deepening the spiritual lives of its members. The parish oversees four zonal chapels and 15 village chapels, ensuring that the sacraments and the Word of God reach the faithful in every corner. These chapels serve as centers of worship, learning, and communal support, strengthening the bonds of unity among parishioners.

A dedicated team of 15 main catechists and 15 helper catechists play a vital role in nurturing the faith. Through their tireless efforts, children prepare for the sacraments, youth engage in faith formation, and adults find spiritual guidance. Their commitment ensures that the Gospel message continues to flourish in every home and heart.

Through the intercession of Our Lady, Queen of Peace, the parish has remained steadfast in times of both joy and challenge. It is a community where faith is not only practiced but lived—through acts of service, prayer, and unwavering dedication to God’s mission.
